The Educational Legacy

Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, believed strongly that education provides the most veritable means for personal and social transformation. The first Jesuit schools were set up for the purpose of training future Jesuits. Soon, other people began to desire that this model of education be made available to non-Jesuits also. The first Jesuit school opened to the public was built and endowed in Messina in 1548, facilitated through the invitation and generous donation of a benefactor. This gave birth to the tradition of Jesuit education open to all. Through-out the five centuries of Jesuit existence thus far, there have been benefactors and founders who have built and endowed new Jesuit schools and existing ones, instituted scholarships and made other generous donations. In this hallowed tradition of outstanding generosity, the goal is always clear: to make sure that as many people as possible, especially the children of the poor, have access to the life-transforming experience of Jesuit education.

Gonzaga Jesuit College is the generous benefaction of Dr. Ernest and Barr. (Mrs.) Nnenna Obiejesi (and the Obijackson Foundation). The initiative that would give birth to the College began in 2016 when Mr. Paul Erinne, a generous philanthropist, started a conversation with the Jesuits about collaborating in education in Okija. The conversation took shape when Mr. Paul Erinne approached Dr. Earnest Obiejesi, inviting him to join to build a Jesuit school in Okija. The Jesuit Superior General, Fr. Arturo Sosa Abascal, S.J., was glad to give his permission and for construction to begin in earnest. Thus, Gonzaga Jesuit College, Okija was born – a magnanimous benefaction of Dr. Ernest and Barr. (Mrs.) Nnenna Obiejesi for the good of humanity and to the greater glory of God!
